Thanksgiving outfit ideas: two friends in a burgundy cable knit and an oatmeal sweater over a navy collar with wide jeans, carrying a pie and wine past a set Thanksgiving table

Your Thanksgiving outfit gets decided between packing the car and the first hello. You’ll sit at a table for four hours and end up in a photo that stays on someone’s fridge for a year. Both work in wide jeans, and it’s easier than it sounds, because only one piece changes with each room.

I picked these 15+ looks on Pinterest for you. They follow the long weekend from your own family’s table to his, past the stove and Wednesday night’s bar, all the way down to Florida. The right Thanksgiving outfit shows the people at the table that you made an effort, and it still looks like you.

What Should You Wear to Thanksgiving?

A good Thanksgiving outfit is a knit with something underneath it, wide jeans and a shoe you can keep on all evening. That’s also the base for every look below, and the first three show it at your own family’s table.

The day itself is mostly sitting. I call it the four-hour chair, and I’m sure you remember it from last year. A stiff, high waistband is what you feel after the second plate, and a relaxed or low rise is what you forget you’re wearing.

In all three looks, a tee or a shirt also shows under the sweater. Once the oven has been on since morning, you’ll see why.

1) A Burgundy Cable Knit With Low-Rise Jeans

  3. UGG Womens Tasman Slipper ChestnutView on Amazon.com

If you only pack one of these, I’d make it this one. A cropped burgundy cable knit sits over a white tee that peeks out at the hem, and the mid-blue jeans sit low on the hip. That low rise is also the kindest thing you can wear to a long dinner.

The tan slippers in hand are worth copying. If you’re heading to a shoes-off house, you can wear boots for the drive and change at the door.

2) A Navy V-Neck Over Chambray, With a Bandana

  3. Oversized ChambrayView on Amazon.com

Denim on denim sounds like a lot for a family dinner. Here it works because the chambray shirt only shows at three edges: the collar, the cuffs folded back over the sleeves and the hem. A navy bandana fills the V, and light wide jeans keep the rest easy.

Hold on to that collar, because the next section is built on it.

3) A Black Funnel Neck With Barrel Jeans

by Pinterest

  2. Flowjair Barrel JeansView on Amazon.com

Black looks a little more serious than burgundy. Still, everything around it stays relaxed. A black funnel-neck knit has a strip of white tee at the hem, and mid-blue barrel jeans curve out at the knee.

Pointed black kitten heels then make it a dinner outfit. After dessert, that curved leg still lets you pull your feet up on the couch.

A chunky knit has one real downside, and it’s heat. Next to a fireplace or a full oven, a cable knit gets warm fast, which is why there’s a tee underneath. The sweater comes off, and you’re still dressed.

Our fall outfits for women build on this base for the rest of the season, each one sorted by the piece that carries it. Our women’s sweaters and baggy jeans also cover both halves of it.

All of that works at the table you grew up at. At someone else’s, however, people look at you a little more closely.

What to Wear to Thanksgiving Dinner With His Family

Meeting his family over a turkey adds one thing to your Thanksgiving outfit, and it sits at your neck. It’s a shirt collar under the sweater. The first hello usually happens at the door, at hug height, so the collar is the first thing anyone sees up close.

All three looks here wear one, and two of them fold the shirt cuffs back over the knit. Otherwise, everything stays from the first section.

4) An Oatmeal V-Neck Over a Navy Shirt

This is look 1 with a collar added, and you can see how much the navy changes, because it frames the oatmeal knit at the neck and again at both cuffs. There’s a brown leather belt in view because the sweater stops at the waistband, and light wide jeans keep it young.

5) A Brown Crewneck Over Light Blue, With Pleated Trousers

by Pinterest

  2. siliteelon Light-Blue Button ShirtView on Amazon.com

If you’re visiting a dressier family, this is the one place where jeans turn into trousers. A dark brown crewneck sits over a light blue shirt, with the cuffs folded wide over the sleeves. Pleated brown trousers and a brown belt keep everything in one color family.

Gold earrings are the only jewelry here.

6) A Brown V-Neck, a Striped Collar and a Red Bag

by Pinterest

A blue and white striped collar sits in the neck of a chocolate V-neck, over mid-blue straight jeans. The red leather shoulder bag is the one bright thing in the outfit, and I’d suggest you copy that. That’s because a single strong color next to all that brown looks like a decision.

A shirt under a knit has two weak spots. The collar points curl up after a few hours, and a stiff cotton shirt bunches under a fitted sweater.

So pick a soft, washed shirt and a knit with room in the body. Then you’ll look as neat at the pie as you did at the door.

That covers dinner at someone else’s table. But whoever cooks that dinner needs something different.

What to Wear When You’re Hosting Thanksgiving

If you’re hosting, I’d bet you’re the warmest person in the house. The oven’s been on since morning, and you’re standing next to it while your guests come in from the cold. So the host’s Thanksgiving outfit is one layer thinner than everyone else’s.

Both looks below do that with a single knit and wide pull-on trousers, and each one stays in one color from top to bottom.

7) A Cream Off-Shoulder Knit With Wide Pants

The oven clock in this photo reads 19:25, and the food is still being plated. That’s about as honest as hosting gets. A loose off-shoulder knit lets the heat out, and the cream wide pants match it. Your hair also goes up and out of the way of the pans.

8) A Black Cardigan Buttoned Up, Satin Pants and Zebra Flats

by Pinterest

Here a fine black cardigan is buttoned all the way and worn as a top. Black satin wide-leg pants have a smooth waistband with no button, and you won’t think about them once all evening. Pointed zebra-print flats are the one loud thing. You can also stand in them for hours.

Cream is the risk here. Wear an apron until the doorbell rings, because a splash of gravy on cream shows from across the room. Satin, too, shows water from the sink. If you’d rather not worry, black knit pants forgive more than either.

Everything so far happens inside a house. The night before happens outside.

Thanksgiving Eve Outfits for the Night Before

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the one loud night of the weekend. Toast, whose payment systems run in thousands of American restaurants and bars, compared that Wednesday in 2024 with an average Wednesday the same year. During that Wednesday, alcohol sales were up 79 percent.

Their explanation is the one you’d guess. Everyone’s back in their hometown and goes out to see old friends, so I think you know who’ll be at the bar that night.

This is the first time the bottom half of the Thanksgiving outfit changes. All three looks are minis, and two of them sit on black tights and knee-high boots. Meanwhile, everything above the skirt stays simple.

9) A Sheer Grey Top, a Pleated Mini and Patent Knee Boots

by Pinterest

This was shot with a flash on an empty street. Most of Wednesday’s photos will look like that. A fine, sheer charcoal top sits over a black pleated mini, with sheer black tights and patent knee boots. A small black bag finishes it.

If sheer is too much for your town’s bar, a black tank underneath keeps the shape.

10) A Brown Leather Jacket Over a Lace Slip Skirt

by Pinterest

This is the city version. The leather jacket is big enough to belt at the waist, and a chocolate satin slip skirt with a lace hem shows underneath. Burgundy patent heels match the burgundy bag. Bare legs in late November are fine for the short walk to the door, and not much longer.

11) A Brown Button Cardigan, a Black Mini and Lace Tights

by Pinterest

Lace tights make a plain skirt look planned. Here a fitted chocolate cardigan is buttoned as a top. Under it come a black mini, black floral lace tights and pointed dark brown knee boots.

It’s the look I’d hand you if you only had twenty minutes between the drive and the bar.

A mini on a bar stool rides up, and tights snag on rough wood. Pack a second pair of tights. They weigh almost nothing. If the evening turns into a date, my fall date night outfits pick up right where this leaves off. Most of them also stand on knee-high boots.

Wednesday is for the people you grew up with. Friendsgiving is for the people you picked.

Friendsgiving Outfits You Can Have Fun With

Friendsgiving is the free version of a Thanksgiving outfit. Nobody’s grandmother is at the table, so the piece that would get a comment at home gets a compliment here. In all three looks, there’s burgundy in something big: a leather jacket, a bag, a wool coat.

Friendsgiving is often a potluck, so you’ll walk in holding a dish. Two of these looks carry the bag on the shoulder, which keeps both hands free.

12) A Burgundy Leather Jacket Over a Cream Tank

by Pinterest

I know a burgundy leather jacket might sound like a lot to you over jeans. It works because everything under it is plain. Underneath are a cream ribbed tank, light wide jeans and a brown belt with a western buckle. A few gold necklaces fill the neckline.

More jackets that wear the same way are in my fall jackets for women.

13) A Long Brown Plaid Skirt With a Burgundy Bag

by Pinterest

A long skirt is the easiest thing to sit in for four hours. This one is a bias-cut plaid maxi in brown and tan. A brown knit goes on top, and a slouchy burgundy leather bag hangs from a chain strap.

From behind, the look is all browns and one burgundy, which is the palette of the whole weekend in a single photo.

14) A Burgundy Coat, an Olive Mini and a Loud Scarf

Burgundy wool coat, cream knit, olive mini skirt, sheer brown tights, knee-high boots and a fringed check scarf
by Pinterest

This one adds a second loud piece, the scarf. It’s a fringed orange and purple check, worn long over a burgundy wool coat. Under the coat you’ll find a cream rib knit and an olive mini, with sheer brown tights and dark brown knee boots.

Brown tights keep the whole thing warm in color, where black would cut it in half.

Burgundy leather is loud, and that’s both the fun and the risk. At a friend’s table it’s the point. At his parents’ table, on the other hand, it would be the first thing anyone mentions.

A maxi skirt drags on a wet sidewalk, so pick one that ends just above the shoe. Our skirts and jackets have both pieces.

All of this assumes November is cold. For a lot of people, it isn’t.

Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas for Warm Weather

AAA, the motor club that forecasts holiday travel every year, listed its most-booked Thanksgiving destinations for 2025. The top three were Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. So for a lot of people, Thanksgiving is warm.

In the heat, the palette stays and the fabric gets lighter. Both looks still keep the burgundy or the brown in an accessory, while the rest goes light.

15) A Ruffled Cream Tee, Cuffed Wide Jeans and Burgundy Mary Janes

by Pinterest

I’ll admit a short-sleeve tee looks odd next to a turkey. The holiday sits in the burgundy, in velvet Mary Janes and a leather shoulder bag.

Everything else is for the weather: a cream short-sleeve tee with a ruffled hem and dark wide jeans turned up to show a striped lining. The iced coffee tells you the temperature.

16) A Long Grey Cardigan Over a White Tank

by Pinterest

This long, fluffy cardigan sits somewhere between a jacket and a sweater. It’s buttoned only at the top, over a white tank and dark wide jeans with a brown belt. Brown suede ankle boots match the bag.

In a warm place you’ll take the cardigan off for the afternoon and put it back on for an air-conditioned restaurant at night.

Velvet and humidity don’t get along, and a velvet shoe spots in Florida rain. Suede spots in the rain, too. If the forecast says showers, a burgundy leather flat does the same job.

That’s every room of the weekend. What’s left is the bag.

How to Pack One Bag for Thanksgiving Weekend

How to pack one bag for Thanksgiving weekend: burgundy cable knit, white tee, light blue shirt, wide jeans, black mini with tights, knee-high boots and a brown leather jacket next to a weekender bag

For Thanksgiving 2025, AAA projected that 81.8 million people would travel at least 50 miles from home. Nearly 90 percent of them would go by car. For most of them, the luggage goes in a trunk. So every piece has to work on more than one evening.

Here’s the bag that every Thanksgiving outfit above adds up to:

  1. One knit in burgundy, brown or cream, for both family dinners and Friendsgiving.
  2. A white tee and a soft shirt with a collar, so the knit can come off and the collar can go on.
  3. One pair of wide jeans, worn in the car and at every table.
  4. A mini and two pairs of black tights for Wednesday.
  5. Knee-high boots, worn on the drive so they don’t take up space.
  6. One jacket, leather or wool, for the bar and the walk to Friendsgiving.

That’s one of everything, and it’s a rule I fully expect you to break with a second knit.

If you buy one piece for the weekend, I’d make it the knit. There’s one in every section above, and in a family photo around a table, it’s also most of what anyone sees.

Every Thanksgiving outfit in this post comes down to the knit, the jeans and the one piece that changes. That’s also what ends up on the fridge next year.

Four weeks later, the same knit goes back in the car, and you’ll find it at the center of my Christmas outfits for women.

Questions About Thanksgiving Outfits

What colors should I wear for Thanksgiving?

Burgundy, chocolate brown, cream and navy. The family photo is a good guide: brown on brown fades into a wooden table and a roast, while cream or burgundy near your face stands out. Orange, the color of most Thanksgiving decorations, barely shows up in the looks here.

Can I wear leggings to Thanksgiving dinner?

At your own family’s table, yes, with a long knit that covers your hips. At his family’s table or in a restaurant, I’d switch to wide jeans with a relaxed rise. They’re just as comfortable by dessert.

Should I wear a dress or jeans to Thanksgiving?

None of the sixteen looks here is a dress. Jeans and a knit simply handle four hours on a chair better. If you love a dress, a sweater dress with black tights and knee-high boots works the same way the Wednesday minis do.

What should I wear to Thanksgiving at a restaurant?

Dress the way you would for his family, with a collar under the knit and dark jeans or trousers. A restaurant is cooler than a kitchen that’s been running since morning, so bring the jacket.
