Tighter than you expect. There is no lace to pull the fit in, so the shoe holds on by the shape of the upper alone, and half a size too big turns every step into a small slide. On a cork footbed the rule is different again: your heel sits in the cup and your toes stop a finger's width short of the front, and the bed moulds to your foot over the first weeks rather than fitting perfectly on day one.
What is here splits three ways. A cork-footbed sandal is the one that lasts years and gets better. A sport slider is the throwaway convenience pair for the short walk. A suede slip-on or clog is the one that reads like a proper shoe and goes further than either.
Socks under sliders and footbeds are a choice, not an error, and a ribbed sock changes the shoe more than the shoe changes the fit.
Also in men's footwear: sneakers and boots.
