8 Fall Jackets Women Are Buying Before It Turns Cold

Every autumn comes down to one jacket, the one by the door that goes on without a decision. It has to handle 50 degrees at nine in the morning and 68 by two. The fall jackets women are buying this month are all competing for that hook.

Most of the season runs on two of them, and everything else is a matter of taste. Below are eight jackets, ordered from the ones that cover the most days to the ones you only need for a week. Pick the right one in September and the question is settled until December.

How to Choose a Fall Jacket

The fall jackets women actually wear all season pass three questions: what temperature range it covers, whether it survives rain, and what has to fit underneath.

Range matters most. You probably know the morning that starts cold and turns warm by lunch, so a jacket that opens up easily earns its hook. Heavy coats bought for the coldest week tend to stay in the closet for most of October.

Rain sorts the materials. Leather and waxed cotton shrug off drizzle, while suede and light denim are dry-day jackets.

For a first jacket, I’d start where those three questions overlap best, and that’s leather.

Leather Fall Jackets for Women: Brown or Black

Of all the fall jackets women own, leather covers the widest range of days with the least thought. It blocks wind, survives drizzle and works from jeans to a slip skirt. Your only real choice is the color. Brown and black behave like two different jackets.

One detail decides whether any leather jacket looks expensive, and that’s the shoulder seam. On the shoulder bone, it looks tailored. An inch lower, it looks borrowed.

1) Brown Leather, Worn Loose

Brown leather behaves like a neutral. It goes with cream, grey, olive or black, and black leather never quite manages that.

Here it hangs loose over a white tank and dark wide jeans. It’s also the jacket that shows up most in my fall date night outfits, worn open over a bandeau or a mini.

2) Black Leather, Boxy and Short

Black leather is harder against everything, so it needs the softest thing you own underneath. A boxy cut that ends at the hip works over wide light jeans and a cropped top.

It’s the same proportion that carries my fall office outfits for women. I’d buy this one shorter than you think.

Suede and Denim Jackets for Dry October Days

Suede and denim are the lighter fall jackets women reach for in October. Both look best when it’s cool but mostly dry. Neither likes a real downpour, so I’d keep something coated for November.

Shape matters more here than with leather. A jacket that ends at the hip sits well over a wide trouser without cutting the leg in half.

3) The Suede Blouson, Cropped at the Hip

Suede is everywhere this autumn, mostly as a short blouson. This taupe one sits open over a white shirt and wide blue jeans, with a brown suede bag that picks up the color. It survives a damp morning. Real rain on the walk home is another story, and most people only find that out once, standing under an awning and watching the color darken by the minute.

The Same Shape as a Bomber

A bomber is the blouson’s sportier sister, with a ribbed hem that stops at the waist. It comes brushed and soft, plain and light, or padded and coated, and the coated ones handle weather that suede can’t.

This one is olive, worn open over a white tee with grey barrel jeans and sneakers. A bomber in a darker color gives you the same shape for wet days. It was also the jacket of 2016, and I traced what came back from that year in my 2016 outfits.

4) Black Denim in a Dark Wash

Light wash looks like spring and always will, which is why I’d go darker now. Black and dark grey denim sit properly in autumn light, especially head to toe like this, with black jeans and white sneakers. Size up one and there’s room for a knit underneath.

5) The Denim Barn Jacket With a Cord Collar

Barn jackets came out of farm workwear, and their signature is the corduroy collar. This one is dark denim with big patch pockets, cropped over cream trousers and a brown bag. It’s the most practical jacket on this list, because the pockets actually hold things.

The Waxed Version for Wet Days

Waxed cotton is the barn jacket’s rain gear. Barbour, the English company that started out selling oilskins in South Shields in 1894, made it the uniform of muddy weekends. Here it’s dark and boxy with olive wellies, a short skirt and a cream knit carried for later.

Lighter Fall Jackets for In-Between Days

Maybe you know the October days that are too warm for leather by noon. These jackets are for those, and both have one thing in common: they open up fast when a room gets warm.

6) The Short Trench, Cut Above the Knee

Short trenches are everywhere this fall, cropped well above the knee. It looks less formal, which is why it gets worn on a Tuesday.

Thomas Burberry developed gabardine, the tightly woven cotton behind the trench, in 1879, and it still sheds a shower. Here it’s worn open over a brown top and light jeans. Whenever you close it, knot the belt instead of buckling it.

7) The Retro Track Jacket as an Actual Jacket

Cut boxy in a heavier fabric, a track jacket sits closer to outerwear than to gym kit. This navy one with white stripes comes with matching wide track pants and a white bag. Its zip opens the second you step inside, and that’s what you’ll use most.

The Cropped Puffer for the Last Week of Fall

There’s a week in late November when nothing above is enough and a winter coat is still too much. That’s what a cropped puffer is for.

8) The Cropped Puffer, for the Handover Week

Keep the quilting small, because big baffles start to look like ski gear in grey light. This black one stops at the waist over a black top and wide grey jeans. In January it goes under a longer coat, which is the best reason to own one.

What to Wear Under Fall Jackets

One layer underneath is enough. Your jacket handles the temperature, so the piece under it only has to handle the room you take it off in.

A fine knit works best, because chunky knits turn the shoulder into a block. A shirt works if the collar lies flat under the jacket collar.

Then there’s the hem, and I’d bet you’ve never thought about it. Whatever goes underneath should be clearly shorter or clearly longer than the jacket.

Two Fall Jackets Women Need for Most of the Season

All eight are tempting, and two of them do most of the work. A brown leather jacket and one lighter jacket cover most days from September to the end of November. I’d check these before buying:

• It opens or unzips easily for warm rooms.
• Its shoulder seam sits on your shoulder bone.
• There’s room for a fine knit underneath.
• Its hem ends clearly above or below whatever you wear under it.
• You know whether it can take rain, or you own something that can.
