Fall to winter outfits: young woman in a long brown coat, grey wool midi skirt, black tights and knee boots on a frosty November morning

Fall to winter outfits do two things at once. They keep you warm at eight in the morning, when your breath shows, and they still feel right at two in a heated room. The usual fix is the biggest coat in the closet, which then gets carried around all day.

There’s a nicer way, and it’s easier than it sounds. The 20+ outfits in this post move your fall wardrobe into the cold one layer at a time. Each one comes with the reason it works. You’ll be warm on the walk and still yourself in the room.

How to Dress When Fall Turns Into Winter

Fall to winter outfits laid out in layers: a thin white turtleneck, a grey cable-knit cardigan, a camel wool coat, thick black knit tights, brown knee boots and a cream scarf

Warmth doesn’t come from thick fabric. It comes from still air trapped between and inside your layers. Air only carries heat away slowly when it can’t move.

The ASHRAE tables for clothing insulation put numbers on it. A thin sweater rates 0.25 clo and a thick one 0.36. That’s why two thin layers hold more heat than one heavy knit. Sheer tights rate just 0.02, which is close to nothing.

For me, that changed how I build fall to winter outfits. I keep the base from my fall outfits for women, add thin layers that trap air, and finish with one piece that blocks the wind. The first of those thin layers is also the easiest to add.

Start With a Turtleneck Under Everything

A thin turtleneck is the cheapest warm layer you can own. It closes the gap at your neck, where a crew neck lets cold air in. It fits under every sweater you wore in October.

Watch the collar, though. Under a thick knit it bunches up, so I’d pick a fine rib in cotton or merino.

1) A Sweatshirt Over a White Turtleneck

Fall to winter outfits: grey college sweatshirt over a white turtleneck with black leather trousers

Your easiest version is a grey college sweatshirt pulled over a white turtleneck. Black leather trousers and a gold chain make it look like more than gym clothes. The white collar frames your face in grey light.

2) A Brown Knit Over a Black Turtleneck

Brown cable-knit cardigan over a black turtleneck with flared jeans and a red-brown bag

Here the turtleneck is black under a brown cable-knit cardigan, with flared mid-blue jeans and brown shoes. A red-brown bag picks up the warm tones. A dark turtleneck under a lighter knit is the version that looks most put together.

3) A Cable Knit Over a White Turtleneck

Grey cable knit with a collar over a white turtleneck and grey wide trousers

A grey cable knit with its own collar sits over a white turtleneck, so two collars stack at the neck. Grey wide trousers and a belt keep the shape simple. I’m not sure the double collar would work in a thicker knit, but in this one it does.

Once the turtleneck is on, the next layer can be lighter than you’d expect.

The Cardigan as a Middle Layer

A cardigan is the most flexible middle layer you can own, because it opens. On the walk it stays buttoned, and inside it hangs open without a single thing coming off.

It works best as a fitted knit that stops at the hip, so that’s the shape to look for among knits. A long, loose one under a coat adds bulk, and I don’t think it adds much warmth.

4) An Olive Cardigan With Dark Barrel Jeans

An olive cardigan layered on a plain white tee goes with dark barrel jeans, rolled once, and black loafers. Olive sits between fall brown and winter grey, so it fits both seasons.

5) A Beige Cardigan Over a Turtleneck

Here a beige cardigan closes over a white turtleneck, with black wide trousers and brown suede shoes. Turtleneck plus cardigan is exactly the two thin layers from the start of this post.

Two thin layers keep you warm indoors. Outside, they need something that stops the wind.

The Long Coat Goes Over Your Fall Layers

In fall to winter outfits, a long wool coat is the piece that turns fall into winter. It blocks the wind, so the air in your layers stays still, and it covers whatever is underneath.

Length is the rule, and it’s the one I’d never break. I’d look for a coat that reaches below your knee. The coat should be longer than the jacket or knit under it, or the layers look like an accident.

If your fall jacket is short, almost any long coat works over it. Our guide to fall jackets women are buying covers the shorter pieces.

6) A Long Black Coat Over Grey Knit

A long black coat hangs open over grey knit from neck to ankle, with a small black bag. Grey and black together look calm and expensive, and the coat covers almost the whole outfit.

7) A Black Coat With a Mini Skirt and Knee Boots

Long black coat with a cream turtleneck, black mini skirt, tights and black knee boots

This is how a mini skirt survives November. With a long black coat, a cream turtleneck, a black mini skirt and black knee boots, only a few inches of tights show. Your coat does the warming, and the boots cover the rest.

8) A Brown Coat With Light Wide Jeans

Here a long brown coat goes over a cream top and light wide jeans, with black loafers and a beige tote. Brown carries the fall palette into winter, and the length of the coat makes the jeans look even longer.

9) A Check Coat Over a Hoodie

A long check coat over a grey hoodie and light jeans is the casual version. With the hood out over the collar it feels relaxed, and a black quilted bag makes it look intentional.

A long coat also makes the next question easier, because it covers most of a skirt.

Skirts and Dresses in Fall to Winter Outfits

If you’ve ever tried a skirt in November, you know it’s the hardest part of fall to winter outfits. The clo numbers explain why. Sheer tights add almost no warmth, so your legs depend on length, boots and thick knit.

A long skirt with knee boots leaves almost no skin exposed. A short skirt needs thick opaque tights and a long coat to work at the same temperature.

10) A Denim Maxi Skirt With a Brown Sweater

A long denim maxi skirt with a front slit goes with a brown sweater and black boots. Denim is heavier than most skirt fabrics, and the slit shows boot instead of leg.

11) A Grey Wool Midi Skirt and Knee Boots

Fall to winter outfits: grey wool midi skirt, belted brown sweater and tall brown boots

This grey wool midi skirt pairs with a belted brown sweater, and tall brown boots disappear under the hem. Wool traps more air than cotton, and the boots cover the gap. Of every skirt here, this is where I’d tell you to start.

12) A Check Skirt Under a Leather Jacket

A brown check midi skirt and brown knee boots sit under a black leather jacket. The jacket handles a mild day, and a long coat goes over it once it gets colder.

Knee boots aren’t the only way to keep your feet warm, though.

Loafers and Thick Socks for the In-Between Weeks

Maybe you’re not ready for boots yet. Before it’s cold enough, there are a few weeks when loafers with thick socks work better. A visible white or cream sock adds warmth where a loafer leaves your ankle bare. If you’ve got white sports socks, I’d try those first.

It doesn’t work in rain or snow, so keep this for dry days. On wet days, I’d switch to boots. Our rainy day outfits for women show which pairs handle the puddles.

13) Loafers, White Socks and Flared Jeans

A long black coat and flared jeans end in black loafers with white socks, and a cap finishes it. You only see the sock when you walk, and that’s exactly when people look.

14) A Brown Blazer, Brown Tights and Loafers

Brown oversized blazer with brown tights, white socks and black loafers

An oversized brown blazer with a short hem goes over brown tights, white socks and black loafers. Wearing socks over tights is a small trick that adds warmth at the ankle, where you feel the cold first.

15) A Grey Coat, a Check Mini and Loafers

Grey long coat with a check mini skirt, sheer tights, white socks and loafers

A long grey coat and a grey sweater sit over a check mini skirt, sheer tights and white socks in loafers. This one only works on a mild dry day, and I wouldn’t try it below freezing.

Once your feet are warm, your neck and head are next.

Scarf, Beanie and Cap: Cozy Without the Bulk

A scarf and a beanie add more warmth per gram than anything else. They cover your neck and head, which are often the only parts left in the open.

They’re also the easiest place for color in fall to winter outfits. A bright scarf over a neutral coat is the whole outfit. It comes off the moment you’re inside.

16) A Check Scarf and a Grey Beanie

Fall to winter outfits: light blue fluffy sweater, grey beanie and brown check scarf

A fluffy light blue sweater and black wide trousers get a grey beanie and a long brown check scarf. Since the scarf is the only pattern, it carries the outfit.

17) A Knit Scarf Over a Cap

Here a cream knit scarf wraps over a baseball cap, with a black leather jacket, gloves and grey sweatpants. It’s a streetwear version of the beanie, and the scarf covers your ears.

18) A Brown Beanie, a Long Scarf and Sweatpants

Brown beanie, long brown scarf, brown leather jacket and cream sweatpants

A brown beanie and a long brown scarf go with a brown leather jacket, cream sweatpants and a tan bag. Everything is in one color family, so even sweatpants look planned. Our sweatpants outfits take that idea further, from the cafe to a bar.

There’s one more layer that keeps your core warm without adding sleeves.

The Puffer Vest as a Warm Middle Layer

A puffer vest keeps your core warm and leaves your arms free. Under a coat it adds a layer of trapped air. Over a hoodie, it works on its own on milder days. If you run cold, I’d start here.

Keep it short and fitted. A long vest under a long coat is the version I’d steer you away from, because you end up looking twice as wide.

19) A Cream Puffer Vest With a Cap

A cream puffer vest goes over a brown top, with a cap and an iced coffee. Cream on brown is a soft color pair, and the vest looks lighter than a full puffer jacket.

20) A Cream Vest Over a Grey Knit

Here the cream vest sits over a grey knit, with light grey jeans and a black tote. Its knit sleeves show, which makes the vest look like a layer.

21) A Brown Vest Over a White Hoodie

Fall to winter outfits: brown puffer vest over a white hoodie with light jeans and a cap

A brown puffer vest over a white hoodie turns light jeans and a brown cap into a cold-weather outfit. With the hood outside the vest, it reads casual and warm.

22) A Brown Vest Over a Brown Hoodie

Matching a brown vest to a brown hoodie makes one block of color on top, which looks calmer than two different browns. Black jeans and a small black bag keep the bottom simple.

Fall to Winter Outfits for the Walk and the Room

Three friends laughing as they come into a warm cafe, taking off a camel coat, a checked scarf and a beanie

All of these fall to winter outfits solve the same problem: cold outside, warm inside. The trick is that each layer comes off on its own. That way you’re never stuck in a sweater that’s too warm for the room.

Before you leave the house on a cold morning, I’d check five things:

  • Your neck is covered by a turtleneck, a collar or a scarf.
  • You’re wearing two thin layers instead of one thick one.
  • The coat is longer than everything under it.
  • Your legs are covered by length, boots or thick tights.
  • You can take off any layer and the outfit still looks finished.

Once it’s properly winter, the same layers carry on into our winter streetwear for women.

Questions About Fall to Winter Outfits

What should I wear when it’s around 40 degrees?

Two thin layers and a long coat. A turtleneck under a knit or cardigan, a wool coat on top, and boots or thick socks cover most mornings around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 4 degrees Celsius.

Can I wear leggings in fall to winter outfits?

Yes, as a warm base under a long sweater or a long coat. Thick, matte leggings look closest to trousers, and an oversized knit over them keeps the outfit from looking like a workout.

What works for school or work?

A turtleneck under a cardigan or knit with wide trousers works almost anywhere. Add a long coat for the commute and take it off inside, and the outfit underneath still looks finished.

What do I wear when it rains?

Swap suede and loafers for leather boots and keep wool on the outside, since it stays warm when it gets a little damp. A long coat with a collar you can turn up does more than an umbrella on a windy day.
