If your favorite pants have a drawstring, a sweatpants outfit can take you a lot further than the couch. It just has to look like you meant it. That comes down to a few decisions, mostly the cut and the shoe. So it takes less effort than you’d think.
I picked these 15+ outfits on Pinterest for you. They go from a coffee run to the airport to a bar on a Friday night. With the right shoe and a top that fits, nobody looks twice at your sweatpants, except to ask where you got them.
What Sweatpants Are in Style Right Now?
Wide ones, cut straight or baggy and long enough to sit on your shoe. For years, the sweatpant was a jogger, slim through the leg and cuffed at the ankle. It was basically a skinny jean in fleece.
Then the whole shape of pants loosened. In the fall of 2021, Levi’s told investors that looser fits already made up almost half of its women’s and men’s bottoms range. Sweatpants followed the jeans.
A wide leg also does something a cuff can’t. The fabric falls in long folds down to the shoe instead of bunching at the ankle, so the pants look like trousers first. You keep the soft waistband, and the shape does the dressing up.

1) A Grey Zip Hoodie, a White Tank and Wide Grey Sweats

I’d start with this one, because it shows the whole idea in one photo. The light grey zip hoodie and the wide grey sweatpants match, while a cropped white tank breaks them up in the middle.
Its hem falls all the way onto chunky silver sneakers, and that’s the length you’re after. A black shoulder bag and an iced coffee finish it.
2) A Grey Crewneck With Striped Wide-Leg Track Pants

These are technically track pants, with three white stripes down a very wide leg. With a grey crewneck and silver runners, they read the same as sweats. So I’d count them in.
Side stripes are the sportier way into the same silhouette. The stripe draws one long line from the hip to the shoe, so the leg looks even longer.
3) A Black Fitted Long Sleeve Over Light Grey Sweats
A black long sleeve that stops at the waistband is the simplest top you can wear here. Below it, the light grey sweats are wide enough to swing, and a burgundy patent bag adds the only color.
With a wide leg, the catch is the length. If the hem stops above your ankle, the pants look like they shrank in the wash. If it drags, it frays at the heel within a few weeks, so aim for the top of your shoe.
Still, the pants are only half the outfit. What you wear on top decides whether anyone notices them.
What to Wear With Sweatpants on Top
Wide pants carry a lot of fabric, and the top decides whether all that fabric looks planned. When one half of an outfit is loose, the other half usually fits. That’s why a tank, a baby tee or a fitted long sleeve works so well here.
Of the twenty sweatpants outfits I kept from Pinterest, fourteen are built this way. The narrow top shows where you end and the fabric begins.
The other way is to go oversized on purpose, with a top in the same color as the pants. A set in one color reads as one piece, so the volume looks planned. The same proportion rule runs through our baggy jeans outfits for women.

4) A White Bra Top With Low Dark Green Sweats

This is the most daring version, and it’s honest about it. A white bralette-style top sits over dark green sweatpants worn low on the hip, with a single white stripe down the side.
It’s a look for home, the gym or a warm day. The low waistband is the detail worth copying.
5) A Grey Baby Tee With Light Grey Sweats
Grey on grey only works when the shapes differ, and here they do. A cropped grey baby tee fits close, while the light grey sweats with a white drawstring fall wide to white sneakers.
Gold necklaces and a stack of bracelets keep all that grey from looking like gym clothes, which is the one risk with a tonal outfit in a single soft fabric.
6) A Black Tank With Wide Black Sweats
All black is the easiest version to copy, because only one color has to match. A fitted black tank sits over wide black sweats, and the waistband is folded over once so it sits a little lower.
Black also looks sharp for longer than light grey, which shows every mark. White sneakers peek out under the hem.
A fitted top has one drawback. It shows your midriff when you lift your arms, and a bra top only works in a few places. For errands, a baby tee or a long sleeve gives you the same line with more coverage.
Now the pants look like an outfit. Whether it looks like you meant to leave the house depends on your feet.
Can You Wear Uggs With a Sweatpants Outfit?
Yes, and it’s the softest version. Sheepskin boots came to California with Australian surfers, who pulled them on to warm their feet after the water. UGG started selling them there in 1978, so the boot has always been about comfort after the effort, which is exactly what sweats are for.
Because both pieces are this soft, a sweatpants outfit with Uggs needs one thing to hold it together. Keep a single color family from the waist down, like grey with cream or chocolate with chestnut, and the outfit reads as a set.
7) A Grey Knit Set, a Cream Wrap Top and Platform Uggs
Knit sweats feel dressier than fleece, and this pair shows why. The grey knit pants have a white letter on the thigh, and the grey zip cardigan matches them. A cream wrap top sits underneath.
Cream platform Ugg slippers pick up the color of the top, so the outfit ends where it started.
8) A Light Grey Hoodie Set With Cream Platform Uggs
A one-color set holds up on the street, too. The light grey hoodie and sweatpants match exactly, and the cream platform Uggs peek out under the hem.
A brown suede shoulder bag adds a second texture, and you’ll notice how much that small bag changes.
9) Dark Brown Sweats, a Taupe Long Sleeve and Chestnut Uggs
Brown sweats are the alternative to grey that most people don’t try. Here they’re dark chocolate, with a fitted taupe long sleeve and chestnut Uggs, so everything stays warm in tone.
The tan leather tote is the structured piece, and it’s what keeps the outfit from looking like a lazy Sunday.
Uggs and sweats are both soft, so together they can tip into slippers-at-home. Add one structured piece, like a leather tote or a suede shoulder bag. Suede also spots in the rain, so spray your Uggs before the first wet day.
Uggs keep it cozy. For something sharper, the shoe has to get thinner.
Why Ballet Flats Work With Sweatpants
A ballet flat is thin, low and a little formal, which is everything a sweatpant isn’t. That’s exactly why the pair works, because the flat makes the soft fabric look chosen.

10) Cream Sweats, a Black Knit Tee and Black Flats
From behind, you can see the whole trick. Cream sweats sit low with the waistband showing, and a short black knit tee ends just above it. Black flats peek out under the hem.
A small brown suede bag on the shoulder and sunglasses make it look like a city morning.
11) A Cream Sweatshirt Set With Grey Satin Flats
A hem that reaches the shoe is usually the safer length, but flats are the one place to break that rule. These cream joggers are cuffed above the ankle, and that gap is exactly what shows off the grey satin flats.
The matching cream sweatshirt has a white tee peeking out at the hem. A printed bag in the crook of the arm is the only pattern.
Flats have no padding and no grip, so keep them for short walks and dry days. Pair them with sweats that end at the shoe or are cuffed, because a long hem steps on a flat and hides it.
Inside and on the way to coffee, that covers it. Outside in November, you’ll want a jacket.
What Jacket to Wear With Sweatpants?
A leather one, because it’s the opposite of everything else you’re wearing. Leather is smooth and stiff where sweats are soft, so the jacket gives the outfit an edge that more cotton can’t.
Keep it short or boxy. A short jacket leaves the full length of the leg in view. When it gets colder than this, our fall to winter outfits add the layers that make it warm enough.

12) An Oversized Black Leather Jacket Over Grey Sweats

On a city street, an oversized black leather jacket is worn open on a white tank. The wide grey sweats sit low on the hip. Silver runners and a gold chain repeat the metal of the zips.
It’s the outfit I’d point you to if you only have grey sweats and one jacket.
13) A Brown Leather Jacket, a Grey Hoodie and Brown Track Pants

Leather over a hoodie looks heavy on paper, and here it’s the best part. A grey hoodie sits under a dark brown jacket with contrast stitching. The brown track pants carry white stripes down to silver sneakers.
Oval sunglasses and a striped tee at the neck make it feel styled rather than thrown on.
14) A Black Leather Bomber With Black Track Pants

A black leather bomber with a ribbed hem goes on top of a white tee and black striped track pants. Even on the sofa, the jacket and the glasses make it look like a work-from-home day that turned into plans.
Real leather is heavy and expensive, and cheap faux leather can crack at the elbows within a season. If you’re buying one, a brown or black jacket goes with grey, cream, brown and black sweats alike. Our jackets carry both.
That gets you through an ordinary day. The longest day you’ll spend in sweats in public is a travel day.
Sweatpants Outfits for the Airport
At the airport, sweatpants are close to a uniform, because you sit for hours, line up at security and sleep upright. So the challenge is a sweatpants outfit that still looks put together after ten hours. A sweatshirt or hoodie on top helps, since it doubles as a blanket on a cold plane.

15) A Light Grey Sweatshirt Set and Silver Runners

This sweatpants outfit is as simple as travel gets. A light grey sweatshirt and matching sweatpants, silver runners and a ponytail, with a printed tote sitting on the suitcase.
With a matching set, you only had one decision to make at five in the morning.
16) A Cream Hoodie, Grey Sweats and a Red Cap

Hood up over a red baseball cap is the airport version of not wanting to be seen, and it still looks deliberate. The cream hoodie meets light grey sweats, and a tan leather bag with a charm hangs from one arm.
Sunglasses inside an elevator are optional, but they do finish it.
17) Brown Sweats, a White Long Sleeve and a Hoodie on the Shoulders

Brown is the smart color for travel, because it hides more than light grey does. Here chocolate sweats meet a fitted white long sleeve, and a brown zip hoodie is tied over the shoulders for later.
White sneakers, headphones and a brown suitcase keep everything in browns and white.
A floor-length hem picks up everything on an airport floor, and light grey shows it. If you fly often, darker sweats or a hem that ends at the shoe stay cleaner. Slip-on shoes also save you time at security.
Once you’ve managed ten hours in public, a night out is easy.
Where Can You Wear a Sweatpants Outfit Out?
Almost anywhere casual, as long as the top gets dressier the further you go. The pants can stay the same from a store run to a bar at night, because people see your top half first. So that’s the half that changes.
18) A Grey Baby Tee With Black Track Pants for a Store Run

For a store or a quick lunch, a fitted grey baby tee with a small print is enough. Black track pants sit low with white stripes down to black sneakers. The black shoulder bag stays close under the arm.
19) A White Long Sleeve With Brown Sweats for Dinner at a Friend’s

Dinner at a friend’s place is where sweats feel most at home. A white fitted long sleeve sits over dark brown wide sweats with a white drawstring. Brown suede shoes match the bag on the shoulder.
It’s relaxed. The fitted top still makes it look like you got ready.
20) A Black Bodysuit and a Leather Jacket for a Night Out

At night, the top does all the work of telling everyone you’re going out. A black scoop-neck bodysuit sits under a leather jacket pushed off the shoulders. Below it, black track pants with white stripes fall wide to the ground.
Sunglasses hooked into the neckline and a denim bag make it a bar outfit. It’s about as far from the couch as sweatpants go.
Sweats still have limits. A restaurant with a dress code, a client meeting or a wedding won’t read them as an outfit, however good the top is. I’d keep them for places where you’d also wear jeans.
So which pair should carry all of this?
Which Sweatpants Should You Buy First?

Light grey. It’s the classic color, and of the twenty sweatpants outfits I kept from Pinterest, nine wear it, more than brown and black together. Grey also shows the shape of a wide leg best, because the folds stay visible in a light color.
When you shop, these are the four things I’d check:
- Cut: wide or straight, with a hem that reaches the top of your shoe.
- Fabric: a thick cotton blend with a brushed lining, because thin jersey clings and shows every line.
- Waistband: wide and soft, so you can fold it once or wear it low.
- Color: light grey first, then chocolate brown or black.
If you buy one pair, I’d make it light grey and wide. Our women’s sweaters and sneakers cover the top and the shoe. More fall looks around the same pieces are in our fall outfits for women.
So the next time you tie that drawstring, choose the top and the shoe for where the day is going. When it gets properly cold, our winter streetwear for women has the warmer layers.
Questions About Sweatpants Outfits
Not if the hem reaches your shoe and the top either fits close or matches the pants. What looks lazy is usually a hem that’s too short, a pilled fabric or a waistband that has stretched out, so replace a pair once it loses its shape.
In a casual office, wide black or dark grey sweats with a fine knit and loafers can pass. In a business casual office, pull-on tailored trousers with an elastic waist are the better choice, since they feel similar and read as work pants.
Joggers taper to a cuff at the ankle. Sweatpants in the current cut fall straight or wide to the shoe. Track pants are the smoother cousin, usually with stripes down the side.
Have them hemmed, or fold the waistband over once, which takes a little length off the leg. Rolling up a wide hem looks like an accident, so I’d avoid that.
