Every year has a guy who owns about six pieces of clothing and still looks like he grew up on that campus. He isn’t assembling a frat boy outfit. He got two things right and stopped, and everyone in the room reads that as belonging.

The read happens on the walk from the sidewalk to the door, while everyone already standing there knows each other. Get it right and nobody could tell you afterward what you had on. That’s the part worth having.

You don’t need the letters for any of this, and you don’t need to live in the house. Twelve fits below, most of them two pieces deep, and none of them need boat shoes.

Table of Contents

What Counts as a Frat Boy Outfit Now

Prep pieces cut wide. A rugby or a polo or an oxford up top, khakis or light jeans folding once at the shoe, a low sneaker, a curved cap. Think back to the last game-day group photo you actually looked at. The fits that still hold up have one soft fold of fabric sitting on the shoe, and the ones that read 2015 have none. I pulled a few hundred saved fits for this page and the split was that clean.

Searches for the look doubled in the last month and peak the week of September 28, which puts them in football season rather than in rush.

1) Striped Rugby, Light Baggy Jeans, Brown Loafers

Three pieces, and there’s a good chance you already own one of them. A rugby is knit heavier than a polo, so it holds its shape when you leave the collar alone. Watch where the denim lands: one fold above the shoe, nothing stacked. If yours are hemmed short, cuff them wide instead of pulling them down.

2) Plaid Short Sleeve, Open Over a White Tee

If you’ve ever written the open button-up off as your older brother’s move, I did too. It does more work here than anything else you’ll put on. Boxy cut, sleeve ending mid-bicep, every button undone. Go thick on the tee underneath, or the whole thing goes limp by noon.

3) Navy Half-Zip Over a White Collar

I know the half-zip is a piece your father also owns. It came through the last decade anyway, because it never clung to anybody. One inch of white collar at the neck is the whole trick, and without it you’re just wearing a sweater. This is what I reach for at 9am on four hours of sleep, and you’d never read it off me.

4) A Game-Day Polo in Team Colors

Team colors are the one place on this page where a logo earns its keep. Game-day button-downs and polos climb on the same curve as the whole look and peak two weeks earlier, which tells you what people are dressing for. Your school’s two colors, then stop. The top is loud enough that a pattern anywhere else turns the fit into a bit.

Where the Break Sits Decides the Frat Boy Outfit

The break is the fold your trousers make where the hem meets the shoe. It’s the one measurement here worth memorizing. No fold reads 2015. One soft fold reads now. Three folds reads like you borrowed them from someone taller. Khaki isn’t required, by the way. I keep saying khaki out of habit, and the color does none of the work. Width carries the same argument through our streetwear for men guide.

5) Red Knit Polo, Khaki Trousers, Cream Cap

A polo tucked all the way around reads as a dress code somebody handed you. Tuck the front third and leave the rest out. That’s the whole difference between wearing it and being told to. One saturated color up top, everything else sand, and no logo bigger than your thumbnail.

6) Cream and Burgundy Rugby, Black Wide Trousers

Black under a rugby sounds like it cancels the whole reference and it’s the version that travels furthest. A bar in November. People who have never heard of your school. The stripe carries the pattern and nothing else has to.

7) Maroon Crewneck Over a Collar, Cream Wide Trousers

I’d bet your grandfather wore this, and it hasn’t needed an update since. Collar out at the neck, cuffs out at the wrist, everything else left alone. Wear it against something that isn’t a lawn. Half of why this reads current is the wall behind it.

8) Sage Overshirt, White Tee, Khaki Shorts

Sage overshirt open over a white tee with khaki shorts, cap and low sneakers, summer campus fit

Shorts stay in rotation deep into October on most campuses, so this earns its place. Khaki shorts landing an inch above the knee, an overshirt left open, crew socks showing. Any shorter on the hem and you’ve walked back into 2013. The cap is doing as much work here as the shirt.

The Hat Is Doing More Work Than the Shirt

Two out of three fits I pulled had a cap, and you’ll clock it before you clock the shirt. Hardly any were fitted. Rope hats, washed trucker caps, plain cotton in one color, all curved and all facing forward. A cap finishes this look. It also covers hair you didn’t wash, which on a Tuesday is why most of them are up there.

9) Cream Cable Knit, Black Trousers

Spend on this one, which is not a sentence I write often. Secondhand cable knits pill at the elbow and it shows in every photo you end up in. Cream over black is the softest this look gets, and it lands with people who have no idea what any of it references. Let the sleeves push themselves up.

10) Red Rugby, Brown Corduroy

Corduroy buys you three more weeks before you need a jacket. Brown or rust, cut straight, breaking once. The wale does what a pattern would do without adding one. If cords feel like a stretch, brown wide-leg denim does nearly the same job.

11) The Frat Boy Outfit That Works After Dark

Cream knit polo with black wide trousers and sunglasses indoors, night version of the frat boy outfit

Everything above holds up in daylight. This is the one for a house party where the lights are low and the floor is sticky by eleven. Knit polo, black trousers wide enough to move, no cap. You can wear the collar up if you want, but understand that’s a decision you’re stuck with for the night.

12) Blue Check Shirt, Tan Wide Trousers

The hardest one here, because a buttoned shirt has nowhere to hide. Tan below, check above, the trouser doing all the work. Sit down in this and it still reads right, which the slim version never managed. Shirt untucked, sleeves rolled twice.

The Theme-Party Frat Boy Outfit, and Where It Stops

A good share of people searching this are dressing for a themed night or a spirit week, and that version is allowed to be loud. Pastel polo with the collar popped, a visor, sunglasses on a cord, shorts a size short. It’s a costume. It should look like one, and the twelve above cover every night that isn’t.

Do Boat Shoes Still Belong in a Frat Boy Outfit?

No. They’re the fastest way to age one of these fits. You’ve already run this read on somebody else, and so have I: the guy whose shoes are three years older than everything else he has on, and you noticed the shoes before you noticed him. Boat shoes anchored the 2015 version and they drag the whole decade in with them. A white or bone leather low does the job now, and suede does it better with khaki. Own a pair? Keep them for the theme-party fit.

What to Buy First if You Own None of This

One rugby and one pair of khakis a size up. Under fifty dollars secondhand, and it covers four of the twelve above. The cap comes third. Rugbies and half-zips are the part worth browsing properly, so start at the sweaters rack and skip anything cut slim through the body. I made the same width case for ordinary class days in our college outfits men roundup, if that’s closer to what you need, and the season-wide version sits in the streetwear for men guide.

The guy at the top of this page never worked any of it out. He got two things right and quit. I can’t tell you when it clicks, but about two weeks in you stop thinking about it too.

Whether the rugby holds through next spring or follows the boat shoe out, I honestly don’t know yet.

Frat Boy Outfit: Common Questions

Can I wear a frat boy outfit in winter?

Yes, and it barely changes. A barn jacket or a heavy flannel shirt jacket goes over the rugby, the low sneaker becomes a brown leather boot, and the khakis break on the boot instead. The cap keeps working. A technical puffer is the thing that breaks it, so wear yours with everything except this.

What do I wear to a frat formal?

Navy blazer, light blue oxford, grey or khaki trousers, brown leather shoe. Tie only if the invite asks for one, and keep it a plain knit or a repp stripe. Get the blazer soft in the shoulder with no padding. A structured suit jacket on young shoulders reads as borrowed from a parent.

Which brands actually show up in these fits?

Secondhand Ralph Lauren and Gant carry most of the rugbies and oxfords. Uniqlo and Dickies cover the khakis cheaply, Patagonia and Columbia the fleeces, Adidas Samba or Campus the shoe in nearly every photo. Almost none of it gets bought new at full price, which is the part brand lists leave out.

What do I wear if khakis aren’t my thing?

Light wash wide-leg denim covers most of what khaki does here, and grey or sand wide trousers cover the rest. Stay off black denim in daylight, because it pulls the fit toward evening and away from campus. The rule is the leg, so whatever you pick has to be roomy enough to fold once on the shoe.
