Match the weight of the shoe to the width of the trouser. A wide leg needs either a flat shoe that lets the fabric fall straight, or a boot with enough height for the hem to rest on.
With boots, aim for a light break, where the hem folds once on top of the shoe. With flat sneakers and loafers, let it fall straight with no fold.

A Fall Shoe Rotation in Three Pairs
Leather and suede both need about a day to dry out. A pair you wear every day stays slightly damp and creases faster, so two or three fall shoes for men in turn last longer than one.
I’d build the fall around three pairs and keep them in this order of priority:
